A Vegetarian Diet For Children
Eating habits are set in early childhood. Choosing a vegetarian diet can give your childand your whole familythe opportunity to learn to enjoy a variety of wonderful, nutritious foods. Offer your child a wide variety of grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and soy products, keep it simple and make it fun, and theyll learn good eating habits that will last them a lifetime.
As we discussed earlier in the article, How To Turn Your Children Into Vegetarians, It is your responsibility to guide your children in their eating habits. Children raised on a vegetarian diet grow up to be healthier, slimmer and tend to outlive their meat-eating peers. It is much easier to build a nutritious diet from plants and vegetables than from meat products.
Plant products arealso free of the fats, and cholesterol that meat products contain. Plant foods also contain the essential nutrients for growth and development as well as protein, fiber, antioxidant vitamins minerals and the healthy fats.
Whole grains, beans, and vegetables contain complex carbohydrates needed to provide the energy need for the busy life of a child. In addition to this your child will receive the fiber and nutrients provided by whole wheat breads, pasta, corn, and the less common grains such as barley, quinoa, millet and others. Plus you will be helping them to avoid the sugary drinks and treats that are so common today.
Your children do need protein to grow, but not the kind that comes from meat based products. The grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits that you give them will supply all the protein that they need. If your children are very young they will need more healthy fats than their parents or older siblings. You need to be sure that your childs diet includes soybean products, nut butters, and even avocados.
Also be sure that the diet includes a regular source of B-12. This is needed for healthy nerve function and blood. This important vitamin is abundant in many commercial cereals, rice milks, and nutritional yeast.
Be sure the childs diet also includes a variety of green leafy vegetables. When these are combined with the vitamin C in fruits and, vegetables the absorption of iron is enhanced. For more on the vegetarian lifestyle please visit.
